USWA-TEXAS (11/89 to 1/90). 5 Hours

Jimmy Jack Funk vs. Jeff Gaylord

Chris Adams vs. Steve Austin. Chris pins the future of the WWF.

Jeff Jarrett and Bill Dundee vs. Terrance Garvin and Billy Joe Travis. Double Count Out (DCO). I guess no one could get booked to go over Terrance for Pete’s sake. I cared about Terrance less than I did about Jimmy…and that’s very little.

Kerry Von Erich * vs. The Soultaker for Kerry’s Texas Title. Another DCO. Marc Lowrance votes for “more of these two.” I disagree. Soultakin’ ain’t easy for the future Godfather of the WWF.

Hollywood John Tatum vs. Ray Evans

Billy Joe Travis interview. Travis is doing boxing shtick (always a successful gimmick, right Mr. T?) by challenging Buster Douglass. Travis then challenges random fans from the crowd. This evolves into Travis challenging “anybody.” The anybody is Jeff Jarrett.

Southern Rockers * vs. Sheik Braddock and Chris Youngblood. Good match until TV Time expires. You’ve heard it before and you’ll read it again- I HATE the “television time expires” ending. The NWA used it a lot in the 1980s and Watts overused it in the UWF.

Iceman King Parsons interview.

Kerry Von Erich * vs. Battleship Texas. Apparently, Kerry is “training” this big, awkward goof. Well, surprise, Battleship takes a poor cheap shot and Kerry knocks him out with one punch. This kind of stuff is so useless and almost made me stop watching wrestling in the early 90s. I just got tired of the over-schticked wrestling. But, I didn’t stop watching. I think I have an addiction.

Jimmy Valiant vs. Billy Joe Travis

Jeff Jarrett and Bill Dundee and Tennessee Stud Stable. The stable, in this incarnation, is Robert Fuller and Brian Lee.

Jerry Lawler interview. Lawler has to cover-up for Lowrance’s stupid (basically giving away future results) questions. Lawler plays this perfectly.

Kerry Von Erich * vs. Chris Youngblood (Medicine Man)

Kevin Von Erich vs. Gorgeous Gary Young

Jeff Jarrett vs. Billy Joe Travis (Guitar On A Pole match). Lawler does color commentary and runs-in when Jarrett wins the match. Lawler nails Jarrett with the guitar. Maybe Jeff will get his chance to swing a guitar at someone someday. Von Erich makes the save.

Terrance Garvin vs. Chico Torres

Bill Dundee vs. Iceman King Parsons. Terrance Garvin runs in to give Dundee a brutal belt whipping.

Kevin Von Erich vs. Hollywood John Tatum. If Kevin wins, he gets the girl. Kevin takes her- then she’s back in two minutes. I guess Kevin couldn’t hold up his…um…end of the conversation for very long.

Jerry Lawler * vs. Jeff Jarrett. Jeff Gaylord jumps Jarrett before the match and piledrives him on the floor. Jeff does a stretcher job. No match. But…

Jerry Lawler * vs. Bill Dundee. Good 13 minute match. Lawler nails Dundee with a boot.

Dustin Rhodes vs. Gorgeous Gary Young

Jimmy Jack Funk vs. Chris Youngblood. What is the advantage of using Jimmy Jack as a face?

Kerry Von Erich vs. Billy Joe Travis. Billy Joe Travis nails Kerry with a guitar. Travis was using Jarrett’s future gimmick at this time.

Eric Embry, Chris Adams, and Matt Borne vs. Jeff Gaylord, Steve Austin, and Sheik Braddock. “Embry’s Return” is a good story in the beginning of the match. Akbar nails Adams for the Austin pin. Had I not known that Embry was booker the first time I watched all of this, I would have thought Embry was a very cool character. His storylines are really dramatic and he makes you like him through the storylines. I just can’t get past the fact that this was all self-promotion though. That leaves a bitter taste with me, but I still like watching it.

Jimmy Jack Funk vs. Scott Hunter

Gorgeous Gary Young vs. Jimmy James

Kevin Von Erich vs. Terrance Garvin

Bill Dundee * vs. Steve Austin. Adams runs in swinging a chair at Austin.

Kerry Von Erich vs. Billy Joe Travis

Clips of two Jarrett – Gaylord brawls

Bill Dundee vs. Radical Ralph. Not to be confused with Radical Ralphus of WCW fame. Gaylord and Young run-in. Jarrett saves.

Clip of Devastation Inc. beating up Eric Embry

Chris Adams vs. Hollywood John Tatum. Austin runs-in.

Jeff Jarrett, Bill Dundee, Eric Embry, and Percy Pringle vs. Jeff Gaylord, Steve Austin, Gary Young, and Skandar Akbar. 8-man Texas Tornado Tough Man Contest. A weird gimmick match that is a combination of an 8-man tag, no pin fall, no submission, and a gang “beat down.” Good match.

Clips of the Southern Rockers – Stud Stable feud

Southern Rockers * vs. Stud Stable. Titles vs. $2000. Even in my most markish youth, I never believed the money angles.

Southern Rockers * vs. Stud Stable. Good matches. Approximately 12 minutes each.

Southern Rockers * vs. Sheik Braddock and Medicine Man (Youngblood). TV Time expires. No finish.

5 HOURS. Very Good video quality. All matches are from the Dallas Sportatorium.

200-15

USWA-TEXAS from 1990. 5 ¾ Hours

Matt Borne vs. Billy Joe Travis. Match #1 in the tournament to determine who gets a Texas Title shot at Kerry Von Erich. Lawler, Garvin, and Ronnie P. Gossett do a major number on Travis.

Kevin Von Erich vs. Amos Moses. Tournament match.

Bill Dundee * vs. Steve Austin. Southern Title Match.

Matt Borne vs. Kevin Von Erich. Tournament Match. Borne pulls the upset (?) win. You didn’t expect Kevin to face Kerry, did you?

Terrance Garvin vs. Chico Torres

Dirty White Boys vs. Eric Embry and Bill Dundee

Jerry Lawler * vs. Jeff Gaylord

Jerry Lawler * vs. Jeff Jarrett. Good ten minute match that ends in chaos.

Kerry Von Erich * vs. Taurus Bulba. Another attempt by Devastation Inc. to injure all of the USWA faces. You good, me bad, we fight. I sat through this business just to bring you good specific match listings. It wasn’t easy.

Kevin Von Erich vs. Iceman King Parsons. This Lumberjack Match ends in a melee’ with all of the top faces and heels of the promotion being involved.

Clip of Adams telling Perez that he deserves a world title shot. Terry Taylor turns on Chris Adams. Taylor is a near perfect face, but he’s also a nearly disastrous heel.

Kerry and Kevin Von Erich vs. Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts (Badstreet Rules). The ref ends up calling the match due to chaos. Doesn’t a draw or a DDQ go against the badstreet rules? Adams and Parsons get involved.

Kerry and Kevin Von Erich & Chris Adams vs. Iceman Parsons, Buddy Roberts, and Angel of Death. Penalty Box Match. This match is almost worth seeing for Marc Lowrance’s commentary on Parsons alone. It’s just…odd.

Chris Adams and Jimmy Jack Funk vs. P.Y. Chu-Hi and Gorgeous Gary Young.

Michael Hayes interview. Hayes is basically concert promoting when Hart and Perez interrupt.

Michael Hayes vs. Al Perez. Kerry runs in to save Hayes. Folks, this isn’t 1984 anymore.

Kevin Von Erich vs. Buddy Roberts

Kerry and Kevin Von Erich * vs. Samoan Swat Team (SST). For the Tag Titles. The SST were one of the most underrated teams of the 1980s. Here, they take the belts from the Von Erichs.

Chris Adams vs. Steve Austin (Barbed Wire Match). Clip of Jeannie (Chris’ legit ex-wife) and Steve pummeling Chris after the match.

Jimmy Jack Funk vs. El Grande Colossus. I’m convinced that the person who made this tape kept every Jimmy Jack appearance.

Tojo Yamamoto and P.Y. Chu-Hi interview.

Chris Adams vs. Cactus Jack Manson. Oley was so willing to take bumps that no one else would. The bumps he takes during this match were ones that pale in comparison to Hell In The Cell, but were revolutionary at the time. Akbar and Gary Young run-in to jump Chris.

Matt Borne and Jeff Jarrett interview. Borne takes some shots at Pete Rose, which Jarrett protests to. Probably an inside joke between the two.

Chris Adams interview.

Matt Borne and Jeff Jarrett vs. P.Y. Chu-Hi and Scott Braddock. Tojo and P.Y. begin swinging kendo sticks. Embry, hobbled, comes to ringside to give Matt and Jeff (ever heard those names in a tag team before?) his crutches to use as weapons.

Jeff Jarrett and Jimmy Jack Funk vs. Ron Starr and Scott Braddock. Having this many Jimmy Jack matches should be outlawed in all collecting circles across the internet. It should come with a warning label.

Chris Adams vs. Terry Taylor. Adams, having been injured, is wearing a ridiculous looking umpire’s mask as facial protection. Obviously, it’s also a weapon. Good match in a good feud, but I can’t look at Adams with that mask on. Chono and Mike George run in and jump Adams.

Michael Hayes vs. Buddy Roberts. Freebird vs. Freebird.

Clip of Jarrett being attacked by Devastation Inc.

Jeff Jarrett vs. P.Y. Chu-Hi. Jarrett brings a strap into the ring and starts swinging. P.Y. and Tojo run out of the arena until Jeff gets rid of the strap.

Jerry Lawler interview. Lawler bashes JYD and Lowrance verbally. (same interview as on USWA #3).

Jeff Jarrett vs. Billy Joe Travis (Guitar On A Pole match) Same as on USWA #3.

Eric Embry vs. Jerry Lawler * (Lumberjack Match) Same as on USWA #2.

Jerry Lawler * vs. Terry Gordy. Double Count Out.

Skandar Akbar and Iceman Parsons interview.

Jerry Lawler video (Fabulous Thunderbird’s “Tuff Enough”)

Stud Stable vs. Justin Brothers

Steve Cox interview.

Cactus Jack and Gary Young interview.

Eric Embry vs. Super Black Ninja (Keiji Muto aka Great Muta)

Michael Hayes and Jeff Jarrett vs. SST *. A good, wild DDQ.

Wild Bill Irwin vs. Eli The Eliminator (GWF match) Eli has one of the goofiest all-time wrestling names.

Wild Bill Irwin and Black Bart vs. Coast to Coast Connection (GWF). Did the copyright people ask Art Bell? If you just understood that- you are a cool person.

Wild Bill Irwin vs. Daddy Falcone (GWF)

Hollywood John Tatum vs. The Rattlesnake (no, not the Austin 3:16 rattlesnake) (GWF).

Black Bart vs. Rod Price (GWF)

The Patriot interview. (GWF)

Eddie Gilbert * vs. Terry Garvin (GWF TV Title) 2 out of 3 Falls.

200-16

USWA-Memphis (Jan. - March 1992). 3 hours 30 mins.

The Moondogs vs. Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett. This is one of the greatest brawls of all-time. In this concession stand brawl from Kennett, Missouri (hometown of Sheryl Crow), Lawler, Jarrett, and the Moondogs use everything from trash cans to boards to trash compactors to sinks to beat on and attempt to bury each other. At one point, Lawler attempts to drown Moondog Spot in the sink. Jarrett’s back is bloody from the broken glass. This is one of those five-star brawls that you have to see! This is the best 8 minutes and 45 seconds of brawling you may ever see. The only problem is the video quality, which I would rate as “fair” at best for this match.

Robert Fuller vs. Jr Elsato

Interview with Koko B. Ware

Interview with Richard Lee

The Moondogs vs. Jeff Hayes and Ricky Hutchins. The Moondogs brutalize the jobbers who, I’m sure, did not get paid enough for this beating.

Tom Pritchard, Bart Sawyer, Miss Texas, and Dirty White Boy threaten Eric Embry with leather straps. Embry, Tony Falk, CJ, and Doug Haskins come out and beat Pritchard’s gang with straps. Embry and Haskins have a match and no opponents show up. Pritchard and Co. hit the ring and eight leather straps are swinging chaotically. The USWA was known for chaos and this is a good example.

Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett vs. Leatherface&Domino

The Moondogs vs. Jeff Jarrett and Robert Fuller (MSC) (No DQ) Another wild bloodbath! The wrestlers use everything that can move and be thrown… even the ringside barricade and a thick wooden table.

Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett interview. Lawler brings out Hutchins to show how beaten he is. Betcha’ Hutchins is proud to show the world how much of a jobber he is.

Interview with Eddie Marlin

Show 2

The Moondogs vs. Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett (MSC) Yet another wild and crazy spectacle. Everyone gets beaten with chairs. Lawler fireballs Lee.

Elimination Strap Battle Royal (MSC; jip)

Eric Embry vs. Bart Sawyer

Richard Lee interview. Lee is wearing Mummy bandages due to Lawler’s fire. Funny.

The Moondogs vs. Freezer Thompson and Dazzler Hayes. The Moondogs give a new meaning to the phrase “squash match.”

Interview with Buddy Wayne

Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett vs. The Ninja&Maphesto

Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett interview.

The Moondogs vs. Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett (MSC; No DQ; No stopping the match) (jip) The two teams have another great brawl. It sounds repetitive, but its true - every match is a four to five star brawl. Jarrett piledrives Lee twice, but…Lee then shows up at ringside to suffocate Jarrett. It wasn’t Lee under the bandages.

The Moondogs vs. Chris Frazier and Brian Collins

Jeff Jarrett interview. (re cage match with Richard Lee)

Jeff Jarrett vs. The Shadow

Interview with Richard Lee

Dirty White Boy vs. Eric Embry (MSC; jip) The DWGirl whips a bare-butted Embry.

In a Dirty White Boy squash match, Embry, Falk, and CJ run in and try to strip and beat the DWG. Nothing like a little sexual assault to pull off the Bad Taste Angle of the Year in 1992.

Dennis Coraluzzo interview. O.K., I know Coraluzzo was trying to get heat but this may get second place for the Bad Taste Angle of 1992. Coraluzzo (to paraphrase) says: he’s handling Andy Kaufman’s estate, Lawler has an illegitimate son, Koko B. Ware is the “black sheep” of Lawler’s family, Kamahla will “beat the black off” Koko and Koko should stop eating so much Memphis chicken. Then (what an idiot), to make the point in the end, Coraluzzo snaps a pencil in half. Wrestling may already have a bad reputation, but this kind of stuff just makes it worse.

Koko B. Ware interview. Koko sings.

Jerry Lawler interview

Jerry Lawler vs. The Invader. The Moondogs run in to go after Lawler. Jarrett and Fuller make the save. Flaming Star comes in to throw fire at Robert Fuller. The battle goes on, until Austin Idol finally shows up to clean house with a suitcase. Lawler blinds Moondog Spike with shaving cream. This is another great brawl, despite Idol claiming that the Moondogs sabotaged his plane. Idol says it was “attempted murder.” Idol even has a story to prove it. The story and interview is almost as good as the brawl, but for vastly different reasons. This is a fantastic brawl and a must-see interview.

Jerry Lawler and Austin Idol vs. The Moondogs (MSC; jip) (clips) Another fantastic, creative, insane Moondog brawl.

Show 3

Jeff Jarrett vs. Richard Lee (MSC; jip clips) the Moondogs, Lawler, and Idol end up in the cage, starting an excellent brawl.

3 HOURS and 30 MINUTES. The Video Quality ranges from Very Good to Fair. The first match has fair Video Quality but then it picks up to good or so for the rest. In some parts, there is a little bubbling to the audio, but most wrestling tapers care a lot more about video than audio, as long as you can hear it well enough to hear what people are saying clearly - which you can here. This is the brawling tape to get for America. The Moondogs - Lawler/Jarrett chaos is so fun to watch. It is Memphis brawling at its very, very best

6 HOURS. Very Good to Excellent video quality. If you read the video list and decide if this is a good tape, you aren’t doing it justice. Memphis has a strange way of SOMEHOW making everything interesting and fun to watch. I don’t know how they do it, but it’s the reason they’ve always been successful. No matter who or what they show, they run enough angles and have enough climactic events to get you hooked. Good stuff here.

They were easily the two biggest names in Memphis (yes, besides Lawler) at this time. They were also very good workers at their young(er) ages. Believe it or not, Brian Christopher probably had “BIG STAR” written all over him more than Jarrett did. But Jarrett turned into a WCW Champion and Christopher got to be “Big Sexay.” Both did well, some say Christopher could have done better than he did had he had a bigger push.
